What is Web 2.0?

Posted on 03 Oct 2007

The Hosting Fox has been receiving many questions about Web 2.0 and what the definition is to us.  We will attempt to answer all of these questions here in one location that will be easy for anyone to find.

Web 2.0 is the newest generation for the World Wide Web where web-based communities gather and share information.  You don’t need to upgrade your computer or do anything technical to be a part of Web 2.0, it is all web-based platforms that allow you to get involved.  The term has been being defined since 2004 when it was introduced at the first O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference.

The term Web 2.0 seems to make people think that it is the same internet but new and improved.  Web 2.0 websites can reach a wider variety of people and keep them coming back to your site to share information in a different kind of atmosphere than they once could.  Not only can users of the world wide web find the information they are looking for, they can now interact with other users, to make it a more enjoyable experience.

With the use of RSS feeds, this information can be easily shared and distributed to many different locations with little effort.  Social bookmarking sites like Digg and StumbleUpon, are definitely part of the Web 2.0 revolution, offering a platform where users can easily find hot topics being discussed on the internet or add their own useful information for people to find.

Blogs may have once been a place for people to talk about what is important to them but now with Web 2.0 software developments for internet applications, readers can participate in the topic by leaving comments about what is being discussed, another defining thing for Web 2.0.

Granted some of the technology to power this newest generation of Web 2.0 have been around since the beginning of the internet, however, new ways are being found to use this along with the newly invented technology to power Web 2.0.

The definition of Web 2.0 is tricky to put specific characteristics to as users and software developers find new ways to use Web 2.0 everyday.  The Hosting Fox hopes to help you understand what Web 2.0 is and how you can use it to your benefit.

Importance of Webdesign

Posted on 19 Sep 2007

WebdesignWhen you’re making a website you have to ensure you cover certain points to make sure it will perform as well as it can.  Making a good layout for your website will attract visitors to stay longer if it’s pleasing on the eyes and easy to navigate around.  No one would want to stay on a site that they can’t operate correctly so make sure it’s very user friendly.  Make your design unique to your site and try not to use free templates as this shows how dedicated you are to the site.  If you see a site with the same template there is more chance you will forget about it once you have left.

Make unique focal points about your site such as a nice logo that you have either designed yourself or had a professional design, and then you can incorporate it into everything related to your site such as letter heads, blogs, business cards and many more.

The most important factor of your web design is the content you have on site, make sure that you don’t copy anyone else’s content as it will only show in the search engine results and you will be penalised for it.  Duplicate content will perform very poorly and do you absolutely no good as you won’t rank for any desired keywords.  On the same token, poorly written content can have negative effects on your site making it perform badly in the search engines so you have to make sure just as much effort goes into the content as you took designing it.  If your not very good at English then it would be worthwhile getting a professional to write you a few pages to get you on your way to making some money then buy more when you can afford it.
